"Эта песня основана на германской народной песне "Ах, мой милый Августин" о Святом Августине. Согласно Фрэнку Петерсону:

"Эта песня сложилась в Вене во время чумы 1768-1769. Легенда гласит, что однажды вечером Августин слегка перебрал и заснул на полпути к дому. Утром сборщики трупов (corpse patrol) бросили его тело в телегу с остальными трупами и увезли прочь. К счастью Августин проснулся в самый последний момент к вящему ужасу могильщиков. Практически тут же распространился слух, что вино является не только лекарством от чумы, но и обладает профилактическим действием."
